WATER LEVEL AT KENTUCKY LAKE DAM: 356.1
WATER LEVEL AT LAKE BARKLEY DAM: 356.1
WATER TEMPERATURE KENTUCKY LAKE: 45 DEGREES
WATER TEMPERATURE LAKE BARKLEY: 47 DEGREES
Both of our lakes are about 2 feet above winter pool with stained water color on the main lake because of heavy current. The Crappie bite is fair with both Black and White Crappie being caught in 14 to 25 feet of water. The Bass bite has slowed with most of the fish being taken on the main lake in 10 to 20 feet of water. The key to fishing now is water temps, it won't take to many days of warmer temps and sunshine to push the temps from the mid 40's to the mid 50's, which will put both species in their active pre-spawn feed. The pre-spawn fishing is probably the most consistent of the year as these fish are not as affected by water temp changes and lake level fluctuations as our the spawning fish. At the present it appears the spawns will not be as early this year as they have in the past several seasons, but that can all change with a few days of 60 to 70 degree temps.
BLACK CRAPPIE: Most of the Blacks are being taken in 15 to 18 feet of water on the main lake and the mouths of the bays and creeks on 1/8 oz. hair jigs, tubes, and 3 in. twisters cast over structure. These fish are just a few degrees of water temp away from starting their pre-spawn feeding frenzy!
WHITE CRAPPIE: The whites are being caught both on the main lake and in the creeks on the deeper channel ledges in 15 to 27 feet of water. The most productive angling method has been vertically jigging hair and tube jigs over brush. I did receive a report of some success on minnows fished over structure in 22 feet of water. I would expect these fish to remain where they are until the water temp gets above 55 degrees.
SMALLMOUTH BASS: As the water warms up and the clarity becomes better look for these fish to become very receptive to suspending jerkbaits and medium running flat-sided crankbaits fished on main lake ledges, points , and banks with deep water close by. Some fish are being taken at the present on finesse jigs and jerkbaits fished with slow presentations.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Most of the fish are being taken on small jigs and suspending jerkbaits fished on the main lake. Look for activity to improve when the water warms to around 50, the most productive days early in the season will be the ones with plenty of sunshine.
REMINDER: Now is the time to book your spring trips to fish with “KENTUCKY LAKES FINEST GUIDES”. Don't forget to book your Bluegill and Redear trips for late April and May as we are quickly booking up!
P.S. To all my past and future clients, I recently picked up my new 22 foot Triton X-3 so give me a call to be one of the first to help me break her in!
