Lake Weather Forecast

Kentucky Lake Water Level: 359.3
Water Temperature: 86 Degrees
Lake Barkley Water Level: 359.3
Water temperature: 86 Degrees

Both lakes are slightly over summer pool with the water clarity clear in the creeks and bays to slightly murky on the main lake. Air temperature has been in the mid 90’s for last week with high humidity which has made for some very warm days on the water. The forecast for the next several days is cooler temps with a chance of isolated showers which will be a welcome change. The Bass fishing is still very good in spite of the weather with most of the action coming during the late morning to early afternoon hours because of generation schedules. Schooling Bass are starting to show up in the creeks and the bays on flats and extended points with most of the fish being in the 12-14 inch range with a few 2-4 lb. fish being caught in the mix. The majority of the quality fish is being taken on the main lake ledges in 12-26 feet of water on 10 in. Texas-rigged worms and jig/trailer combinations. Some Smallmouth action is now taking place in the early A.M. and late P.M. hours on topwater baits, finesse worms rigged on a shakey-head jig and finesse jigs. Several Willow Fly hatches on the east side of the lake have started the summer Blue Gill biting with some nice Bass being caught around some of the main lake hatches on topwater baits. Some schooling White Bass are being taken on flats and the mouths of the bays on in-line spinners and small lipless crankbaits. Ledge fishing on the main lake has been dependant on the power generation creating current which is characteristic for the hot summer months. We still have dates available in July and August so contact us to take advantage of our HOT SUMMER FISHING SPECIAL of $35.00 off our regular prices! The summer fishing has been one of the best I have experienced in several years with 5-7 lb. fish being taken about every day. Make sure and take a look at our photo gallery slideshow for some big Bass photos. Ledge fishermen if you are looking for a summertime Bass fishing trip contact me to fish with the guide who cut his teeth fishing deep water structure on Kentucky Lake!

LARGEMOUTH BASS: The majority of the quality fish are on the river channel ledges at the present, but some smaller fish are being caught in the bays and creeks during early morning hours and late evening. Most of our fish are being caught in 8-24 feet of water on the main river channel ledges and deeper points at the mouths of the bays and creeks. The fishing has been very interesting recently because of the variety of baits we are catching fish on. The deep running crankbait bite has slowed recently but when there is good current and the fish move on top of the ledges to feed they are still producing some of the largest fish of the year. DD-22’s, Fat Free Shad, and 700 Series Bandits in parrot, natural Shad, and blue pearl colors are all producing fish. Carolina-rigged plastics are still catching fish and seem to be the best producing method when the fish become slow and lethargic. I have been downsizing my baits and fishing slow and deep which seem to produce fish when they won’t hit anything else. Try rigging with Zoom Baby Brush Hogs, Finesse Worms, and Centipedes in green pumpkin, watermelon, cotton candy, and electric blue colors. Slow-rolling ¾ and 1 oz. spinnerbaits will produce some of the bigger fish if you have the patience to stick with it. Texas- rigged 10 in. worms in plum, junebug, electric blue, and green pumpkin is the most consistent producer at the present, try varying your speeds and retrieve to find out what method the fish prefer that day. Casting and football head jigs in green pumpkin, black/blue, and black/brown with matching trailers have started to produce consistent catches of large Bass.

SMALLMOUTH BASS: The Smallie fishing has been slow recently but when you catch one it is usually a very nice fish. Carolina-rigged creature baits and Finesse worms rigged on a “Shakey Head Jig” have been the most consistent angling methods. I have received some reports of fisherman catching them on topwater baits early in the morning around Willow-Fly hatches.

CRAPPIE: I have not Crappie fished recently but as I mentioned above one of my guides caught 33 last week fishing minnows over brush with most of the fish caught 15-18 feet deep.

WHITEBASS: The Whites are on the river channel ledges with most of the fish being caught in 18-25 feet of water on in-line spinners in white and chrome colors.

CATFISH: The Channel Cats are being caught on both lakes in 22-32 feet of water on shrimp/leech combinations and night crawlers. Try to find points or stump rows on the river channel ledges for the best action. The Blue Cats are being taken in 35-50 feet of water on large minnows and Yellowtail Shad on the main river channel. At present Lake Barkley has been the best Channel Cat fishing with Kentucky getting the nod on the Blues.
