LAKE BARKLEY WATER LEVEL: 359.8
WATER TEMPERATURE: 79
The summer heat and dry weather have arrived moving
most of the fish into their deeper summer feeding patterns. The lake
levels are normal for this time of year and water clarity is from
slightly stained to clear. My guides and I have fished almost every day
this month and the results have been good for the majority of the
species we have fished for. The Largemouth and Smallmouth have moved to
the offshore ledges and the bite is on! The White Bass are on the river
channels and most days we’ve had no problems limiting out! The Channel
Cats and Blue Cats are back in deeper water after their spawns and the
fishing has been fantastic! The Bluegill and Redear spawns are at their
end but good fishing can still be found on deeper main lake rocky
structure this fishing will improve as the Willow Fly hatches should
start in the near future. The Crappie fishing has been a pleasant
surprise with some good catches recently as the fish are recovering from
the spawn and moving to their summertime haunts. The recent B.A.S.S. and
FLW tournaments have produced some unbelievable weights with the pro
anglers praising the lakes as one of the best Bass fisheries in the
nation!

LARGEMOUTH BASS: The Bass have moved to the
offshore ledges and are being caught in 8- 22 feet of water with a
variety of angling methods. Texas rigged 7-10 inch worms in Watermelon
Seed, Green Pumpkin, Plum, and Junebug have all been producing good
catches. Deep –Running crankbaits in Parrot, Fire Tiger, Natural Shad,
Pearl colors, and Whites are currently catching some of the largest fish
of the year. Carolina rigged lizards, worms, Baby Brush Hogs, and
finesse baits are also producing in the deeper water. Large spinnerbaits
in white, white/chartreuse, and mouse colors slowed-rolled over the
ledges have produced some recent winning strings in tournaments. Jigs
are starting to produce good fish by stroking a jig when the fish are
aggressive or dragging football heads on the bottom when they are
lethargic. Spoons from 4-6 inches are also producing large numbers of
quality fish in 18-28 feet of water on the main lake. If you are

Lakes.
SMALLMOUTH BASS: Most of the Smallies are being
taken on the east side of the lake on chunk-rock and gravel structure.
The main lake ledges are also producing generous amounts of the
Bronze-backed battlers. Carolina-rigged finesse baits and creature baits
fished in 12-28 feet of water seems to be the best producing baits.
Finesse jigs and “shakey head” worms fished on light line have also
produced good catches. Large hair jigs in Whites and Pearls have been
excellent choices when the fish are in an aggressive mood. Stick with
Crawfish patterns, Watermelons, and Green Pumpkins for your plastics and
jigs.
BLACK AND WHITE CRAPPIE: Most of the Crappie we are
catching has been in 10-18 feet of water on stakes and brush we have
dropped. Twister-tails in white, chartreuse, and pearl have been the
best producing colors fished on 1/8 oz. jig heads. Minnow fishing is
also starting to produce fish using a 1/0 hook fished above a ¼ oz.
weight over brush , stumps, and stakebeds.
WHITE BASS: The Whites are on the river channel
ledges on both lakes, most of the fish are being taken in 10 to 25 feet
of water on in-line spinners in white, gold, and chrome colors in 3/8
oz. weights reeled aggressively from deep to shallow. Jigging spoons and
minnows are also producing some fish but most are smaller or Yellow
Bass.
CHANNEL CATS AND BLUE CATS: Most of the Channels
are being caught in 20-32 feet of water on nightcrawlers or shrimp-leech
combinations on river channel ledges where stumps or rock piles are
present. Several days recently have resulted in catches of 30-60 fish in
the 2-12 lb. range. The Blues are being caught in 28-40 feet of water on
Yellow-Tail Shad and large minnows, this fishing will continue to
improve all the way into October. Some people don’t think much of
Catfish but pound for pound they fight better than any other species on
our lakes and provide some mighty tasty eating!
BLUEGILL: The Bluegill fishing has been fantastic
this year with some Gills caught weighing in at over 1lb. The spawn is
almost over but the fishing will continue to be good this summer during
the Willow Fly hatches and all the way into October where last year we
experienced some of the best Gill fishing I have ever seen!
